The disproportionate amount of interest in the activities of the Humphreys has always been a mystery worth contemplating. Why the fascination? What drives a person to seek out the details of every coffee date we plan, every trip we take, every adventure we embrace? We will leave those difficult questions for you, the reader, to ponder as we whole-heartedly dive into the Unknown of accepting somewhat last-minute Peace Corps assignments in the Dominican Republic.
Kristy and I will be foolishly releasing our present jobs back into the wild to be plucked by desperate job seekers in order to become a Youth Development Promoter and Community Economic Advisor respectively. We are simultaneously excited and anxious, ready to finally tackle the challenge of international development work while mildly dreading the sustained effort required to successfully achieve language, cultural, and technical competency standards during training. When we got engaged, we discussed spending two years of the first five of our marriage abroad, and of course the opportunity has come about when we least expected it. It has been a long road pursuing this dream, and we are sad to part with our predictable and comfortable life that we love, but on August 18th we are finally departing for our 27 month assignment…just in time to spend our third anniversary in the Caribbean.
So please follow along for the next two years and we will try to sustain your unquenchable curiosity by posting whenever our limited access to the Internet allows us.
Awesome! Congratulations you two
Hi Brian and Kristy!
My husband and I just received our invitations to the Dominican Republic and are coming in March as Environmental Education volunteers! Its nice to see another couple in the DR! Hope to maybe meet you!

Yay! Congratulations! We´ll be looking for you when you get here. Also, let me know if you have any questions…before I came I emailed a current volunteer whose blog I was reading and it was super helpful so I´d love to do the same.
Thank you for making your blog public. I have been invited to the DR as an ICT volunteer departing this March 1st. I currently find myself struggling to find a way to tell my job that I will soon be leaving X-) and wishing that my boyfriend would drop out of med school to come with me. I love hearing about couples joining the Peace Corps! I seems as you folks are having a wonderful time.
I hope you don’t mind me taking a look around but I would like some more information as to what it is like to be a PCV in the DR. I found “Peep Toes for Flats: Update” to be very helpful with my packing list. Most of my packing list also seemed as if I were going camping which felt counterintuitive since most of the Dominican women I know are extremely feminine. Thanks again!

Congrats on your upcoming service! No problem…I hope the blog has been helpful.
If you’re interested, there’s another couple coming in March that emailed me some of their questions. If you’d like, I can forward you the emails I sent to them.
Hopefully we’ll be seeing you soon!
That would be great! Thanks
My email is zeniaDOTperezATyahooDOTcom. Sorry, have to protect myself from annoying spam.
Hi Kristy & Brian,
I stumbled across your blog as I was searching for married couples in the Peace Corps. I really enjoyed your recent post on how it has impacted your relationship. Thanks! My husband and I just submitted our application this week! Can you let me know how long the process was for you from the time you submitted your application to your invitation? I have heard for married couples it tends to take about 1.5 years, so I am wondering if you can give me a vague estimate. I’m so excited.
Thanks,
Angie
Hey Angie!
Good luck on the application! I think it really differs depending on your situation, experience, etc. Ours was just over 2 years, but my husband was also completing grad school in the middle of that. And originally they were going to make him take extra language classes but somehow we got out of that. I think the estimate you heard is about right…I would guess normally from a year to a year and half.
Kristy
Hey Angie,
Was just looking through old comments on the blog and stumbled on this again. Any word yet? Would love to hear how the process has been for you guys!
